Faster Recovery, Fewer Risks with Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery

Close up of a senior woman's eye, showing a cataract, before her laser cataract surgerySay goodbye to long recovery times. Cataract surgery, already widely regarded as one of the safest surgical procedures you can have, has entered a new era with femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS.) At Galiani Ophthalmology Associates, our team is led by esteemed ophthalmologist Dr. David Galiani, a cataract surgery specialist with more than 25 years of experience.

Since taking over the practice in 2006, Dr. Galiani has continually introduced innovations for our patients, and FLACS is one of the most significant. Read on to learn how it’s making cataract surgery faster and safer using laser precision.

Understanding FLACS

FLACS enhances precision by using a laser to assist in key parts of cataract surgery. Light energy replaces traditional blades, allowing for ultraprecise incisions while preserving healthy eye tissue. Dr. Galiani uses the state-of-the-art Catalys® system for FLACS, ensuring a seamless process from start to finish. The process includes:

  • Imaging and Eye Mapping: The Catalys system captures high-resolution 3D images of your eye using optical coherence tomography (OCT.) This helps Dr. Galiani plan precise incisions and lens treatment.
  • Laser Incisions: The femtosecond laser allows for bladeless, computer-guided corneal incisions based on your customized surgical plan. It creates a circular opening in the lens capsule with exact sizing and positioning.
  • Cataract Fragmentation: The laser softens and breaks up the cataract into smaller pieces, eliminating the need for ultrasonic energy during cataract removal. This minimizes trauma to the eye.
  • Lens Removal and IOL Placement: Dr. Galiani removes the cataract fragments using gentle suction, then precisely inserts an intraocular lens (IOL) with peak accuracy.

Benefits of FLACS

FLACS allows for:

  • Smaller incisions
  • No need for stitches
  • Reduced need for anesthesia
  • Reduced risk of surgical complications
  • Less trauma to the eye
  • Faster healing
  • Reduced eye inflammation
  • More accurate intraocular lens (IOL) placement
  • Greater comfort during the procedure

These benefits are especially beneficial for patients with astigmatism. With FLACS, Dr. Galiani can make astigmatic keratotomy incisions to reshape eye curvature and improve vision with added precision. Additionally, FLACS enables the precise positioning of IOLSs, a feature that is particularly crucial in patients with astigmatism.

Many patients experience a smoother recovery, with less discomfort and faster visual improvement, than with traditional cataract surgery.
