What to Do in an Eye Emergency in Reading

An eye emergency can happen suddenly, and knowing what to do can protect your sight. At Galiani Ophthalmology Associates, serving patients in two locations in Reading and Doylestown, Dr. David Galiani leads a team of caring experts providing complete vision care. Although most patients visit our offices for comprehensive eye examslaser vision correction, or cataract surgery, we understand that you can’t plan for everything. That’s why we offer convenient emergency eye care, too.

Recognizing when a situation qualifies as an eye emergency is critical because some symptoms require immediate medical care to prevent permanent vision loss.

Symptoms That Require Immediate Attention

Treat the following as urgent and seek care right away:

  • Sudden loss of vision or severe blurred vision
  • Seeing flashes of light
  • A shadow or a dark curtain over part of your vision
  • Severe eye pain, especially with nausea or headache
  • Chemical exposure
  • A cut, puncture, or object stuck in the eye
  • Significant trauma from a fall or accident

These symptoms may signal serious conditions such as retinal detachment or acute angle-closure glaucoma. Prompt evaluation by one of our experienced ophthalmologists can be vision-saving.

What To Do Before You Arrive

If chemicals enter your eye, flush it immediately with clean water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Do not delay rinsing while arranging care.

If something gets into your eye, avoid rubbing it. Gentle blinking or rinsing may remove small debris.

If an object is embedded, do not attempt to remove it. Lightly cover the eye and seek medical care.

After blunt trauma, apply a cold compress without pressure. Any sudden change in vision following injury should be evaluated the same day.

When It May Not Be an Emergency

Mild irritation, gradual vision changes, or common pink eye symptoms may not require emergency care but should still be evaluated promptly. If you are unsure, calling our Reading or Doylestown office is the safest next step. The team can help determine whether you need same-day treatment.

Why Quick Action Matters in Eye Emergencies

Many urgent eye issues develop without warning. Conditions such as retinal tears or dangerously high eye pressure can worsen quickly. Early diagnosis and treatment greatly improve outcomes and protect long-term vision.

If you experience sudden eye symptoms, call our office at 215-345-5144 in Doylestown or 610-376-1981 in Reading to schedule an appointment with Galiani Ophthalmology Associates for prompt evaluation.
